Projects : Project India
Environmental Education through Audio-Visual Media in India

Global industrial development over the past twenty years has presented new challenges for societies, their inhabitants and the environment. Worldwide environmental problems, such as the global warming and natural disasters, are rising and require solutions that span beyond national borders. Economic globalisation affects everything from daily life to cultural relationships and national ethics. They exacerbate existing inequalities while at the same time create new freedoms and opportunities. However, who benefits from globalisation and what is the price? Unfortunately, the environment usually seems to lose out.

India, with its rapidly growing economy, is currently faced with both the opportunities and pitfalls of globalisation. Whilst personal wealth is slowly on the rise, social inequalities combined with environmental damage seem to worsen. The threat to humans and the environment are clearly identifiable as more groups and organisations are getting involved in projects to protect the future of the environment. National projects alone are not enough to prevent damage to the environment and personal health. Cross-border collaborations need to be determined in order to identify solutions to common problems.

On this background ECOMOVE International carried out an educational project in India in 2006/2007. In the framework of this project a series of film screenings and discussions took place in different cities/regions in India. ECOMOVE has prepared a film programme presenting award-winning documentaries dealing with environmental problems in India and their global backgrounds and causes. In January and February 2007 the film series has been presented in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The film tour covered the following cities: Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Kolkata, Dhaka (Bangladesh), Delhi, Lahore (Pakistan).
